Massachusetts signed into law, in 2018, a statute that provides paid family and medical leave (PFML) benefits to workers. Employers, employees and self-employed are to begin contributing to the PFML program on July 1, 2019.
The benefits of the program will become available in 2021, and will provide temporary income replacement to eligible individuals. Most workers will entitled to receive up to 12 weeks of paid family leave and up to 20 weeks of paid medical leave.
Whom does the PFML cover?
This program is eligible to workers who are:
- welcoming a new child into their family,
- struck by a serious illness or injury,
- need to take care of an ill or ailing relative, and
- for certain military considerations.
There are certain program eligibility requirements that both the employers and employees must meet. This information, along with more information about the new PFML program, can be found by visiting the FAQ sections of Mass.gov Department of Family and Medical Leave’s webpage (be sure to scroll down the page).
