To highlight the beginning of National Tax Security Awareness Week (December 3rd-7th), representatives of the RI Division of Taxation, along with the Rhode Island office of the IRS, presented a Tax Security Awareness press conference on December 3, 2018 with the RI Society of CPAs (RISCPA), at the RISCPA offices.
PGCO Partner, Pat Thompson, joined a panel of speakers who urged consumers and tax preparers to guard against financial data scams and personal identity theft. Tax-related identity theft and tax scams are especially prevalent during tax season.
In addition to Pat’s talk, the event also featured presentations by:
RI IRS office, Sr. Stakeholder Liaison, Odette Turenne
RI Division of Taxation Administrator Neena Savage
RI Attorney General Peter Kilmartin
Kenneth Mendozzi, IRS Criminal Investigations, Asst. Special Agent in Charge
Amy Schram, Better Business Bureau, Sr. Community Relations Specialist
Also attending was Justyn Charon, a staff aide to U.S. Representative James Langevin, and Hollie Mellen, a staff aide to U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse.
Created in 2015, the tax safety awareness campaign is an effort created by the Security Summit, which represents a partnership between the IRS, state tax agencies and the tax industry to combat tax-related identity theft. The press conference was covered by local media. You can view a summary by Providence Journal.
