Returning Child Tax Credit

Did you receive a child tax credit you either didn’t want or qualify for, and want to return the payment?

Since the data used by the IRS comes from taxpayers’ 2020 (or 2019) returns, or a taxpayer’s 2021 situation, there may be a number of people who are no longer eligible for the child tax credit. If you don’t qualify for a refund, they would like you to the return the money using the same procedures that were used for Economic Impact Payment returns provided by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

How to return a paper check:

  1. Write “Void” in the endorsement section on the back of the Treasury check
  2. Mail the “Voided” check to the appropriate IRS location (see chart below)
  3. Don’t staple. Bend or paper clip the check
  4. Include a brief explanation stating the reason for returning the check.
