In addition to the many changes the tax reform has brought to the 2019 tax filing season, there is a new state electronic filing requirement. Tax preparers are now required to e-file state returns within 10 days of any tax software update. There are currently 33 states (see below), including Rhode Island and Massachusetts, that have implemented the 10-day ruling requirement. This number may grow as tax season progresses.
During the months of January through April, tax preparers continually receive tax software updates. Most often, the updates are weekly. If your return is not filed within the 10-business day requirement, it will be rejected by the state. This means your return will have to be recalculated using the most recent software update, which involves additional preparation time for your tax return.
To avoid any potential additional charges, you should return your signed efile forms as quickly as possible, upon receipt of your tax package. Please note that mailing time is included in the 10-day window. Efile forms received after the 10-business day requirement may necessitate additional time to update your return.
